Renewable energy usage in Africa has been reviewed using South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and Mali as case studies. The various national energy policies of these countries were analysed and areas that require attention to achieve sustainability were highlighted. On the overall, the success of sustainable development in Africa lies in addressing the imminent energy crisis in the continent. Excessive usage of fuel wood is already creating considerable environmental problems especially in the Sahel. Africa has all the potentials to solve its energy problems if appropriate infrastructural support can be provided for harnessing the abundant renewable resources in the continent, and if skills are pooled together and experiences shared in addressing the key issues.

I came to Ketura to write my Master thesis about a solar desalination project of my university in cooperation with the Arava Institute. This topic has attracted attention in recent years due to an increased global demand for drinking water, and the ongoing pollution of existing fresh water sources. The experimental setup at the Institute consists of a photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collector and a reverse osmosis unit. The energy used to desalinate brackish or seawater is stored in a battery that is supplied by the photovoltaic cells. The idea behind the project is to simultaneously preheat the feed water and cool the solar panels, as photovoltaic cells show a higher efficiency at lower temperature. The water used to cool the solar panels is then used as feed water. Increased input temperatures enhance migration processes and therefore guarantee a higher fresh water output.

The Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering (LORRE) carries out fundamental research and educates students in the transformation of renewable resources and agricultural commodities into value-added products, and in the purification of proteins and natural products.   In addition to publications and patents, products of LORRE’s work include prototypes for the purpose of translating its discoveries into industrial use.  Thesis and fundamental research topics are pursued in partnership with universities, and government laboratories. Research includes engineering and molecular fundamentals of bioreactor design, bioseparations, industrial biology of yeast, and biochemical catalysis with applications in biofuels, bioproducts, and pathogen detection..

When you convince the people living safely near the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that nuclear energy isn’t “expensive and risky” and that “the
technology has an incredible safety and reliability record” and “an almost
untapped potential for serious cost reductions” of those assertions, I’ll agree to more radiation sickness centers in the model you seem to be advocating. (oh, right, sorry- there aren’t people safely living in those areas anymore—- never mind)
